Adopt a Highway: Texas Trash-Off

During my term as First Officer of the Club, we adopted a stretch of highway.

April 1, 2006: The Southern Cruisers Riding Club will pick up trash on “our” adopted stretch of Hwy 75 (between League Line Road to just north of Willis High School) as part of the 20th Annual State-Wide Texas Trash-Off. Pickup will start at 9 AM. We usually head over to Cracker Barrel afterwards, but this time we may cook out at the roadside park where we meet.

Last year our group was picked to represent the Houston area and take part in a Luncheon in Austin, featuring Senator Todd Staples. We were chosen based on the number of pickups, number of volunteers, other charitable work, and an essay. We also received a nice award plaque.

This event is organized through a partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation. It is the state’s single largest one-day cleanup, where nearly 200,000 volunteers offer their time to keep our state beautiful. On this day, groups all over Texas will be picking up trash and making a difference.

Last year thousands of Texans from across the state came together on Saturday, April 2, for the Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off, one of the largest cleanup events of its kind in the nation. Thousands of volunteers gave up their time for their love of Texas, picking up an estimated 575 tons of litter. More than 1,700 Adopt-a-Highway groups and over 150 communities across the state took part in this Texas-size event!

The Southern Cruisers Riding Club (Conroe Chapter) is a non-brand-specific motorcycle riding club.  We are very safety-oriented and open to anyone. Over the past 6+ years, we have raised approximately $40,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as well as funds for local charities. In 2003, we decided another way to give back that did not involve raising money was to adopt a highway and do our part to help keep these Texas roads that we enjoy riding on clean.

We pick up four times each year, and average 50 bags of trash each pickup. We even found a kitten once that was adopted by one of our members and appropriately named “Cruiser”.
